The action of the arcing contacts compresses a small amount of gas behind a piston. The compressed gas is trapped and cannot escape between them until the arc contacts begin to separate. This pre-compression stage creates a momentary difference in pressure, where the gas driven by the gas blower is blown over the arc. The arc is extinguished as the current passes through the zero point.
