What is Braking Resistor? When it is desired for the electric motors to stop quickly or go down to normal speed, the energy produced by the motor is converted into direct current in the inverter and converted into heat via the braking resistor, by connecting the resistor with an appropriate ohmic and wattage value to the brake terminals of the speed changer (inverter). The energy produced by the asynchronous motor is converted to direct current in the inverter. It is converted into heat via the braking resistor. The braking resistor is an ohmic load used in the drive to prevent the DC bus voltage from rising. Why Use a Braking Resistor? Even though the de-energized motor is requested to stop, it continues to rotate for a while thanks to the kinetic energy it has at that moment. As the rotor continues to rotate, the engine works like a generator and feeds the grid. In such cases, if it is desired for the motor to stop quickly or to decrease to normal speed, the energy produced by the motor is converted into direct current in the inverter and converted into heat via the braking resistor by connecting the resistor with an appropriate ohmic and wattage value to the brake terminals of the speed changer (inverter). There are two important points to note here. The ohmage of the braking resistor must not be less than the value given in the inverter catalogue. If it is more than the catalog value, the braking time will be longer. The power of the braking resistor may vary depending on the application in which the motor is used. However, since a motor cannot produce more energy than its own power, it is obvious that the power of the resistor will be equal to the maximum engine power. In crane applications, a braking chopper and a braking resistor to be connected to the driver via this chopper module provide a very short and soft stop without jolting. No mechanical braking is required. The energy at the moment of braking is destroyed by the motor itself, thus protecting the motor and thus the load-application from the distortions that will occur from excessive braking voltages. Areas of Use of Braking Resistors Almost all motors directly connected to the drive use a braking resistor. It is used in crane types according to direct applications at the point of resistance values. In hoisting or walking crane models, fixed or traveling bridges are used.
